Sugar King and Montana opened within weeks of each other in 2025 and the two Cuban-inspired bars were inevitably compared, yet Sugar King stands on its own – a stellar example of a focused concept delivered with precision. Co-founded by John Nugent of Lily & Bloom and The Diplomat fame, the venue draws inspiration from the neighbourhood bars, or bodeguitas, of Havana. The menu is trim and always well executed: a rotating three-part selection comprising one long drink, one spirit-forward drink on the rocks, and one served-up cocktail – typically a daiquiri variation. Under the “Three for All” menu, past offerings have included the Cuban Milk, a clarified concoction blending black tea, banana, hazelnut and rum. Snacks are equally accessible and inviting – the flan is a treat for both the eyes and the palate.
