Named after both the restaurant’s owner, Song Haiyang, and the imperial dynasty that ruled China from 960-1279 AD, Song is arguably Guangzhou’s most renowned Sichuan restaurant. Although the name nods to the past, the design of the restaurant is decidedly avant-garde. Outfitted in a dramatically futuristic style, the space boasts thousands of glass feathers, mirrored ceiling tiles and stainless-steel pillars throughout. Stand-out dishes by chef Zeng Huaijun, who has appeared on popular reality TV show The Divine Dish, range from boiled tiger grouper to jujube wood-roasted 42-day-aged Peking duck, and from sliced fatty pork with garlic and chilli to refined renditions of Sichuan street food, like boiled dumplings and stuffed savoury pancakes. Despite its elevated status and exceptional service, prices are surprisingly pocket-friendly.
