
If Portuguese food in Macau is a must, nowhere delivers better than Mesa, where José Avillez serves up a refined, contemporary vision of his native cuisine. The elegant dining room – designed by the late fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld – features a dramatic LED starry ceiling that shifts the ambience from day to night. Meanwhile, in the back, head chef Herlander Fernandes leads a kitchen that balances classic flavours with modern flair, offering dishes such as signature crispy suckling pig, rich seafood rice with caviar, and the beloved codfish cake starter. For dessert, the whimsical “One of the Three Little Pigs” – a playful creation of acorn biscuits, cured ham-infused ice cream and bone marrow caramel – showcases the kitchen’s inventive side.
