While there were some snarky reactions to Black Sheep Restaurants hyping Prince and the Peacock as their “first Indian restaurant”, what’s undeniable is the quality of cooking on offer here. Situated above Magistracy Dining Room in Tai Kwun, the beautiful colonial building is an ideal spot to subvert the Raj and remember India’s historic royal courts and the cuisine they enjoyed. Chef Palash Mitra, who brought fame and recognition to sister restaurant New Punjab Club, is in charge of the kitchens. Away from the tandoor ovens of his previous establishment, Mitra has crafted an array of rich, flavoursome curries. Whether it’s the Murgh Makhanwala, the Tawa Jhinga or an excellent version of the classic Gosht Rogan Josh, all are worth trying – and all are at reasonable prices for food of this quality.
