Rapidly expanding F&B group Singular Concepts gave themselves a lot to live up to when they announced a speakeasy dedicated to the First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald, as one aspect of their three-part nightlife concept atop H Code. Ella is intimate, soundproofed and comforting, evoking the sort of Prohibition bars of the 1930s in which the songstress made her debut. The menu focuses on adapted classics from that time, with subtle modifications to the Boulevardier, Sazerac, Hurricane and others. The result is everything an authentic speakeasy would have offered its patrons – a drink, a bite and, of course, a show. Maikal Gurung, formerly of sister venue The Daily Tot, has been tipped to helm the venue too, which bodes well for the future.
