With rent being such a large part of any bar’s overheads, it has made sense to branch out. Typically, this means running a coffee shop on the same premises during the day – see C108, Dio, Barcode, among others. But the crew behind Dead Poets decided to run a barbershop instead. However unusual the gimmick, the drinks make Dead Poets a spot worth coming back to again and again. The menu is the result of work by Nikita Matveev. At Dead Poets, Matveev curbs his worst instincts to throw just about everything into a cocktail in the same manner he does at The Old Man, which has hit and miss results. His creations here are still highly inventive – Wakanda Forever comes served in a striking Black Panther mask glass and uses jackfruit and guava alongside an orange bitter liqueur to evoke the superhero’s exotic origins – but more consistently balanced and appealing. That and the reasonable prices have made Dead Poets a favourite for many.
