Tsim Sha Tsui remains distinctly short of good cocktail bars compared to Central, so Avoca’s opening in late 2023 made it a welcome addition to the neighbourhood. And although Avoca doubles as one of the Mondrian hotel’s flagship restaurants, it’s the bar programme that has caught the eye the most. That’s thanks to the work of Joe Villanueva who, as head of bars, has taken local delicacies and applied culinary techniques to curate a series of particularly Hong Kong cocktails. The 3.15pm Martini spins an espresso martini into something akin to a yuen yeung by mixing coffee and milk tea together, while the Sesame and Peanut Butter Sour takes inspiration from streetside cheung fun. The local elements are welcome in a city that has for so long imported much of its cocktail culture – but even more important, the flavours are just damn good.
